Desecheo Island located off western Puerto Rico is an
undiscovered underwater gem. This collection of
photographs were made between April and December of
2006. These photographs represent an effort to present
aspects of life under the water as seen by a working boat
Captain and dive Instructor with Taino Divers in Rincon,
Puerto Rico. I find taking pictures of individual reef fish to
be difficult. Its not really possible to chase to fish,
patience, controlled breathing and slow movements are
needed to capture images of fish faces rather then their
tails. Some species are quite shy while others are rather
pleased to photographed. It is the later you will mostly see
here. Getting good shots requires that you become part of
the sea rather than one who just takes images from it.
When dive guests talk about their dives on the boat it is all
about the largest creatures that they frequently speak. At
Desecheo, on a regular basis, we see Sharks, Stingrays,
Barracuda, Lobster, Crabs, Eels and Octopi. Shots of
schools of smaller fish are wonderful. They allow one to
represent the scope of life on the reef. On occasion I'm
compelled to think of the river of life... with no beginning
and without end. These streams of living creatures are
imaged against the background of deep blue. An eternity.
